The Fellwalker by Peter John Farnworth

WALK 8 SUNDAY JULY 6th 1975 []

On this walk, I decided to go and climb Helm Crag. Its also known as the Lion and the Lamb, when seen from the Swan Hotel on the main Keswick road just outside Grasmere. As they say, leave the best till last, and that’s what I did. I started the walk at Gill Foot, just up the lane from Grasmere village, by climbing the steep path up to Steel Fell. This would be the quiet way round, as in summer Helm Crag gets very busy on the top, since it is a short walk up from the village and very popular with the tourists. If its misty when leaving the summit of Steel Fell when crossing to Calf Crag, keep to the fence posts and they will lead the way. Also, if it rains, crossing this point can get very marshy in places. When standing on the summit of Calf Crag, I could see over towards Ullscarf and the lay of the land where Bob and I nearly came to grief. That was on Walk 6. When you are on the high ground with the mist down, you do wonder what it is all about, especially when you are caught out in it. To sum it up in a few words, I think it’s the challenge of the mountains and the affection you have for them that draws you there in the first place. But at the end of the day, and when you are down safely, it’s all forgotten about, until the next time.
