The Fellwalker by Peter John Farnworth

WALK 7 SATURDAY JULY 5th 1975 []

This walk started again at the Salutation Hotel, Ambleside. You follow the road on the left-hand side of the lane as you face it, and walk up this steep lane where it divides to the left for Scandale Pass and to the right for the Kirkstone Road, which is better known as The Struggle. If you have ever walked up it, you will know what I mean! This will also lead to the Kirkstone Pass. I will  be walking up this very steep part of the road and at the same time keep an eye open for a steel gate to my left, which is between two oak-trees. Go through the gate then follow the path, which leads onto Snarker Pike. From here, follow the ridge onto Red Screes, where you will be rewarded with some magnificent views down towards Kirkstone Pass and the surrounding mountains. This is one of the quiet summits in this area. From here I passed over the head of Scandale Pass and past Little Hart Crag, then climbed steadily up to High Bakestone - see what a commanding position this cairn has over the Pass. From here, it is easy walking to Dove Crag, then its downhill all the way by following the stone wall to Ambleside. I revisited all these summits again with Mark in 1993, but on that occasion we went onto Middle Dodd A-O—117
