The Fellwalker by Peter John Farnworth

WALK 5 SATURDAY SEPTEMBER 21st 1974

As I got more involved in mountain walking, I decided to walk the Fairfield Horseshoe, which consists of eight summits.

On this day the weather was good, far better than on the last occasion I was here, on Walk 2. I would also see the many views, which I missed last time, such as looking across toward Red Screes, and that lovely cairn near to Dove Crag called High Bakestone. It stands about six to seven feet high, overlooks Scardale Pass and its well worth a visit. It’s about a five-minute walk from the summit.

HIGH-BAKESTONE NEAR DOVE CRAG

My starting point was the Salutation Hotel. I was going to write near to the bus-station, but it got knocked down some years back. I think it is a car park or a supermarket now, but that’s progress for you! For this walk, you have got to be strong in the leg, but you will be rewarded with some very good views, and some good cairns to see. When leaving Hart Crag and crossing the Col between here and Fairfield, you will see the deep gullies and crags to your right - more so on this summit (see Walk 2 for more details). This is something to remember if the mist comes down if you are in this area. From here on in, it is easy walking all the way down to Grasmere.
