WALK 43 SATURDAY AUGUST 4th 1990
This walk took us to Fleetwith Pike on a circular route to Grey
Knotts via Green Gable (see Walk 35 for the start of this route.) This was
another fine walking day with a light breeze blowing over the fells.
We left the car park and left the main path near to Dubs House (disused),
where we cut across the fell side towards the summit of Fleetwith Pike,
which had commanding views over Buttermere (Lake} and the surrounding mountains.
From here we returned to Dubs House and followed the path over open fell side
towards Green Gable (only the second time we have been on this summit,
the previous occasion being
in 1983 on Walk 21.) On this occasion, we spent more time, and so you appreciate
the scenic view much more, and also you will find that being on lower summits
you see the full magnitude of the mountains in their full splendour. This was
without doubt one of the better summits we have been on, with that wonderful
view down the valley of Ennerdale and that perfect view of Pillar
(mountain.) From this position we turn round to see the Scafell group of
mountains, and last but not least the mighty summit of Great Gable
which stood before us. From were we stood, we could see rock climbers scaling
the crags near the summit. What a sight to see. From Green Gable we
dropped down in altitude, and followed the path onto Brandreth, followed
by Grey Knotts. These two summits were very uninteresting, but they had
to be logged up. As you can see, with the position of these two summits, we
could so easily have walked just these two and come back down again to add them
to our list. But we have never walked just to add mountains to a list. We walk
because we love the great outdoors, so we plan a walk to incorporate within the
walk summits other than the ones we have to log up.
