The Fellwalker by Peter John Farnworth

WALK 4 MONDAY JULY 12th 1974 []

After the long walk yesterday to Helvellyn, I decided to have a quiet day in Grasmere. I hired a rowing boat at the lakeside, to have a relaxing couple of hours and to unwind from the last two days of walking. As I rowed well out into the middle of the lake, I could see the splendour of the mountains and this started to pull at my heartstrings so, no-more-to-do, it was an about turn and back towards the landing stage. As I stepped from the boat, the boat-keeper asked, ''Had enough?', to which I replied, ''I have more important things to do" as I passed by and headed towards the lane outside.

CORDALE-TARN

Directly opposite the boathouse there is a path which runs along the side of a stone wall which leads to open fell side. From here this leads to Silver How. From this point there were very good views of Grasmere and round to the Langdales, where I followed a high level path to Blea Rigg and then on to Sergeant Man. This is another good summit to sit awhile, when viewing the Langdale Pikes. From this point, it is downhill all the way back to Grasmere. When you are near to Belles Knott, just try and seek out a little-seen Tarn called Codale Tarn, its well worth a visit. Now there is a quiet place, if ever there was one.
