The Fellwalker by Peter John Farnworth

WALK 34 SUNDAY AUGUST 21st 1988

This was a two-day walk (today and tomorrow). With the distances involved I thought we could complete this area in one trip. This was the first time, we have been in this area of the fells before and we were looking forward to seeing this very picturesque place.

On side of "GRASMOOR" in background "GRISEDALE PIKE" and "ELL CRAG"

It was as it was described to me, but even better when standing at the edge of Buttermere (Lake). What a fine view, looking across the water towards High Crag, High Stile, and Red Pike. These summits will be climbed tomorrow, but the walk today will start at the Bridge Hotel. This walk up to Whiteless Pike from the village, was a long dull trudge that never seemed to end. From here we went to Wandope. You follow a path round the rim of Addacomb Hole, which is just like walking around the rim of very deep volcanic crater. From here we crossed over the very quiet summits of Sail, Scar Crag, and Ell Crag. From this summit we followed the path down to Coledale Hause, then it was straight up the fell side with easy level walking to the summit of Grasmoor. It's so vast and flat on the top, and also featureless. When we were sitting in the stone shelter at the summit, having a bite to eat, the mist dropped down. It seemed so eerie with not a sound to be heard and not a thing to see, just us two poor souls sitting there with not a care in the world. Grasmoor is not a place I would like to spend the night. If the weather had been better, maybe I would have appreciated the surroundings more than I did.

Mountains walked that day:

Whiteless Pike 106    Scar Crag 101    Wandope 51    Ell Crag 24

Sail 52     Grasmoor 20    [[]]
