The Fellwalker by Peter John Farnworth

WALK 32 SATURDAY SEPTEMBER 20th 1986

Today’s walk took us up to the top of Nan Bied Pass, Kentmere, near Staveley. And we will be walking over the other summits we missed last time. The three summits which we will be walking today, and the other five which we walked last time, make up the Kentmere Horseshoe (see Walk 15) and we are looking for a better day than last time we were here.

Summit of "HARTER FELL"

The walk started at the little church where we had just parked the car. From here we proceeded by following the green-way which is called the Nan Bied Pass towards Kentmere Reservoir where the valley started to open up. The walk up to the top of the Pass was quite long, but when you are enjoying yourself the miles pass quickly. At this point we were two hours and ten minutes into the walk. From this point we followed a steep path up to the summit of Harter Fell, where we had a bite to eat and drink. When standing at this summit, because it is in a prominent position overlooking Haweswater, you can see it in its full glory, and also the full face of the High Street range. Standing here, we remembered the bad day we had on Mardale Ill Bell (Walk 15) when the mist was down and we had great difficulty in finding our way off. But now, standing here and looking over towards that summit in these clear conditions, you do wonder what all the fuss was about on that day (says he!) Seeing it now, I could see where we went wrong, but it's nice to know. One never knows, we may pass that way again but hopefully the mist will stay away next time. The other two summits which we went onto, were very good and peaceful like the day itself.
