The Fellwalker

WALK 30 SUNDAY MARCH 2nd 1986
This walk took us from Glenridding near
Ullswater, walking over five summits,
the last one being Hart Side. We left the disused lead mines and took the
path that leads to Helvellyn and followed the little used path near to
Keppel Cove Tarn (now dried up). From here we followed the zigzag path up the
fell side. From
a point one quarter of the way up, the conditions became very icy underfoot so
we fitted our crampons and this made walking much better. The snow in this
area was like a solid block about two feet thick - it just shows you how much
snow had fallen that year. With conditions as they were, we made slow progress
towards the summit of Raise. When we arrived at the summit, there were a
lot of skiers enjoying the conditions (see Walk 23 for more about the ski-run).
What a good walk from Stybarrow Dodd over high level ground to Great
Dodd. Just think about that day; there were fine views and a good layer of
snow down. What more can anyone ask for? And yes, one more important ingredient
was all that good, clean, fresh air. To think that some people pay a lot of
money to go to places like Switzerland, and here we were getting it all free!

On our way back from
Hart Side there was very deep snow down, which made walking very difficult
indeed. But even though the conditions were bad at times, it was still very
enjoyable. We have been here two or three times now, and each time we do not see
many fell walkers in this area, but if you get the chance to come here, you will
enjoy it very much. NOTE: See where Sheffield Pike (97) is, in relation
to Hart Side on the map. We have walked past it in 1984, and in 1986, and
it was another four years before we returned here again to climb it in 1990 on
Walk 39. As I have said before, you cannot climb all the mountains in one day,
some have got to be left for another day (in my case it took me six years).
