WALK
3 SUNDAY JULY 11th 1974
[]
After the long walk in the mist yesterday, and having had a good night’s
sleep, I left Grasmere to climb the third highest mountain in England, which is
called Helvellyn.
I
was looking forward to this walk very much, from what I have heard about the
place from other fell walkers. The weather today was ideal, clear blue skies and
no wind - the makings of a good day. And yes it was!
When you arrive at Grisedale Tarn you can see over to the other side of the
Tarn where there is a very well worn path. This zigzag path will lead to the
summit of Dollywagon Pike. Even if the mist were to come down, there is
no way you would get lost if you keep to the path. From here on in, it is easy
walking over a high level route, passing Nethermost Pike and onto
Helvellyn.
Comments from my walking diary at the time:
As I stood on the summit overlooking Red Tarn, it’s like being in heaven
and looking down on earth. What a wonderful place to stand, with magnificent
view in every direction. But if you ever find yourself on the top when it’s
snowing or misty, that’s when you will really know what fell walking is all
about. As in life, you have good and bad days.
