The Fellwalker by Peter John Farnworth

WALK 21 MONDAY AUGUST 28th 1983

Great Gable. This is another big mountain at 2,949ft. There are so many different ways to this summit. There are hard ways and easy ways. As they say, you pay your money and you take your choice. Plus there are so many things to look out for at this summit, i.e. Napes Needle, another high pinnacle of rock where many rock climbers try their luck to add to  their achievements. Also at the summit, set in rock is a bronze war memorial tablet dedicated to those who died in the last two wars. Last but not least, there is the Westmoreland Cairn. Now there is a cairn to see. It was erected in 1876 by two brothers, for whom it is named. It also overlooks Wastwater. Now here is a place to put the world to rights on a lovely day! But back to the walk…We followed the path from Wastwater Hotel at a steady climb till we reached Bleak Head. From here the climb got steep right up to the summit, with a wonderful view over the Scafells. From here it is an easy walk to Green Gable, with a fine view of Ennerdale valley. We retraced our steps back to Windy Gap, this is between these two summits, then followed a very stony path down to Sty Head Tarn, where we had a very enjoyable swim for half an hour. We then sat back to take in the very warm sunshine.
