The Fellwalker by Peter John Farnworth

WALK 2 – SATURDAY JULY 10th 1974 []

On this occasion I left the tent at home, and decided to go bed and  breakfast. I planned to travel light over the high ground from Ambleside, and follow the mountain path over to Grasmere, where I would stay the night and also to walk the following day, that’s if the legs were up to it.

From "LOW PIKE" looking towards "WINDERMERE"

Caught the train from St Helens to Wigan and from there to Windermere. Arrived at 12-00pm and picked up the bus for Ambleside which stopped opposite the Salutation Hotel, where the walk would start. This route is the same as on Walk 1 to High Sweden Bridge. From here I went over four summits to Fairfield, and was very thankful that the stone wall, which runs over the fell-side, was with me when the mist came down. At times it was very bad indeed. When conditions are like this, especially when on the summit of Fairfield, you align the three cairns up (a heap of stones) that will point the way off by going west and down to Grisedale Tarn, and to safety. When I was nearing the end of the walk, near to the footbridge which goes over Little Tongie Gill, I saw a sign saying ''beware of adders'. I thought to myself, "Lucky old me, I haven’t come across any!"

Mountains walked that day:

Low Pike 172    High Pike 108    Dove Crag 38    Hart Crag 27
