WALK 19 SATURDAY APRIL 9th 1983
On this day the starting point was the Old Hotel, Dungeon
Ghyll, Langdales.
And we will take a circular route from Stool End up the broad back of The Band.
This will lead us past Three Tarns and the path will then take us up this steep
side of the fell to Bowfell, with the last summit being Rossett Pike.
This is another summit few fell walkers visit because they have their eyes fixed
on higher ground, but if they would only take time out to call there they would
be rewarded with a very impressive aerial view of Mickleden Valley and the
Langdales.
Since it was a very cold day with a biting wind, we had to wrap up
well and also there was deep snow on the high ground in places, especially on Bowfell
and Esk Pike. But the nice thing about standing on these summits in these conditions is that it makes you appreciate life and how
fortunate you are, when you consider those less fortunate than yourself.
When the snow was down like it was then, you can see the contours of the
mountains much better. What a fine little summit Allen Crags is! It is
very peaceful, with grand views of Green Gable and Great End. From
this summit, it is a good way to Glaramara, but I do not have fond
memories of this summit. I will tell you all about it in Walk 46 - a tale to
tell without a doubt. When coming from Allen Crags down towards Angle
Tarn, this is under the summit of Esk Pike. The snow was very deep here,
covering the path completely, and as we were making our way across the side of
the fell, my right leg dropped down about two foot through the snow and into a
bog (marshy ground), which I was not too pleased about. So for the rest of the
walk I had to put up with one wet foot. This was a good learning curve for me,
as from then on I always carried a spare pair of socks with me.
