WALK 12 SATUDAY APRIL 2nd 1977
[]
When I arrived at my starting point, which was the Old Hotel Dungeon,
Ghyll, Langdales, I was surprised to see snow on the high fells, so I prepared my self
accordingly. My walk would lead me up The Band, a spur that leads over steep
ground onto Bowfell via Three Tarns. At this point, I fitted my crampons
and slowly made my way up this very steep side towards the summit, where I was
rewarded with spectacular views over towards the Langdale Pikes, which are on
the other side of the valley. From here, I would return to Three Tarns and over
Crinkle Crags and down to Red Tarn, from where I would follow the path back
to Stool End.
Comments from my walking diary:
"What a splendid walk this was, with plenty of snow and ice down - just
the thing to whet my appetite! When I was at Three Tarns I broke the ice and it
was two inches thick. There were very good views from Bowfell - I could
see over towards the Scafells and they looked spectacular, more so with
the snow down. What a picture to behold! Another particular part of the walk
took me from Shelter Crags to Crinkle Crags. This was very
enjoyable indeed. If memory serves me right I think there are five crinkles on
this ridge, the highest being 2,816ft. Towards the end of the walk the snow came
down very heavy and I had great difficulty in seeing where I was walking. It was
so bad, I had to take shelter behind a stone wall for about three-quarters of an
hour until it had cleared up.

Even though the conditions were bad at times, I enjoyed every minute of it.
This is what I like most of all, pitting my wits against the elements."
