WALK 10 SATURDAY AUGUST 14th 1976
[[
This is a good starting point for the motorist who likes climbing to the high
ground as quickly as possible. The walk itself starts at the Kirkstone Pass Inn,
just outside Ambleside, where the Pass leads you down to Brothers Water and then
onto Ullswater.

The
walk that day took me to Caudale Moor and then onto High Street.
By going this way to these summits, you will have the advantage of a 1,400ft ASL
start from the Inn. Also, on the way, you will pass the Mark Atkinson
Memorial Cross, where I believe his ashes are placed. It is said he lived at the
Inn many years ago. When you leave the summit of Caudale Moor, it’s not
as simple as it looks because of the deep gap between here and Thornthwaite
Crag. This gap is called Threshthwaite Mouth and the ascent from here is
some 500ft to the summit, which is very steep and stony. I have a very
interesting tale to tell you about this area, and yes, the mist was down yet
again! You will find these details in depth if you turn to Walk 41, further on
in my Diary.
Thornthwaite Crag has one of the better summit cairns in the Lakeland
Fells. It stands about ten feet high on a stone wall that runs across the
summit. When at the summit of High Street, pick up the path that leads to
Long Stile and see this very fine ridge which leads down to Haweswater. The
village of Mardale actually lies under these waters.
